Canada

Yes, for most travelers from visa-required countries, a new TRV is necessary for re-entry if your current one expires.

  • Permit expiration: The expiry dates of your TRV and your study or work permit are often not the same. It's common for a TRV to expire earlier.
  • In-Canada application: If you apply to extend your permit from within Canada, you must apply for a new TRV separately if you plan to travel outside the country and return.
  • Multiple-entry vs. single-entry: Some TRVs are single-entry, meaning you can only use them once to enter Canada. If you leave, you'll need a new visa to get back in, unless you fall under the US travel exemption.

For Your Information :

  • Work permit = permission to work.
  • Study permit = permission to study.
  • TRV = permission to enter Canada

Renewal Considerations

If you want to extend your stay in Canada as a visitor (stay in Canada longer), you need to apply before your current status expires. If you’re not sure when your status expires, find out how long you can stay in Canada.

If your application to extend your stay in Canada is approved, you will receive a visitor record. A visitor record:

  • is a document that says how long you can stay in Canada
  • includes an expiry date
  • that’s the date that you must leave Canada by
  • A visitor record does not guarantee entry to Canada. If you plan to travel outside Canada or the United States, you need a valid entry document to return to Canada.

A passport stamp documents your official entry or exit from a country and can record important information for your immigration history.

  • Proof of entry: If you need to prove your travel history, especially for later applications like permanent residency or citizenship, passport stamps serve as valuable evidence.
  • Duration of stay: If a border services officer sets a date by which you must leave Canada, they will often stamp your passport with that date. Otherwise, a visitor is generally allowed to stay for six months.
  • Modern alternatives: With the use of airport kiosks and eGates, not all foreign nationals will receive a stamp upon entry. If you need one, you can request it from a border services officer after processing.

Study Permit Expiration Options

If you want to keep studying, you need to extend your study permit. You should apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires. Make sure your passport doesn’t expire at the same time. You can’t extend your study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.

If you apply before your permit expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions as your current study permit until you get a decision.

You should apply to extend your study permit if you plan to travel outside Canada and your permit will expire while you are travelling.

Alternately, you may apply to extend your study permit, apply for a work permit, if you finished studying and are eligible for a post-graduate work permit, or apply to change your status and stay in Canada as a visitor or leave Canada.

Who should renew?

You should only apply for a PR card if:

  1. Your card has expired or will expire in less than 9 months
  2. Your card is lost, stolen, or destroyed
  3. You didn’t receive your card within 180 days of immigrating to Canada
  4. You need to update your card to:
  • …legally change your name
  • …change your citizenship
  • …change your gender designation
  • …correct your date of birth

To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. Some of your time abroad may count towards the 730 days.
